Infestation 2: G.I. Joe #1–Advanced Review
Published on Tuesday, March 13, 2012 by

A few comics worth noting for next week are Locke & Key: Clockworks #5, the penultimate chapter of the Clockworks series, and Infestation 2: G.I. JOE #1 with the return of G.I. JOE scribe Mike Raicht! Also out next week is Godzilla: Legends #5, the final issue of the mini-series, with art by Eisner-nominated and Emmy winning Dean Haspiel.  In the TRANSFORMERS world, issue three of More Than Meets The Eye hits stores, and the digital comic, Autocracy #5 comes out online.  Finally, The Art of Molly Crabapple, Vol. 1: Week in Hell comes out, where artist Molly Crabapple locked herself in a hotel room for a week, and reached her goal of covering 270 square feet of wall with art. All of that sounds great from IDW, but I’m a Joe fan and want to check out Infestation 2: G.I. Joe.

I’ve been enjoying both regular monthly G.I. Joe stories from the interwoven Cobra Command story to Hama’s return. I like the complexity and the nuclear ending to the last Cobra Command part 7 issue. G.I. Joe #11, last week, started revealing some idea of what B.A.T.S., Destro, and an empty country have in common. Hama’s last arc of Real American Hero has been problematic and uneven, but the pissed off Commander is fun to read as he tries to clean house of Freds.

Given that I’m an avid Joe fan, I love the chance to peek at Infestation 2: G.I. Joe #1 this week. That said, I’m not the largest fan of the forced universe cross over that is Infestation. Comixverse/Kittyspryde reviewed the stand alone books with more respect than the cross over Elseworld books garnished in the first wave. Since the announcement, we have made little comment at all on the second season of Infestation.

The Infestation Spreads Again.

Infestation is poking a tentacle into a Joe-verse, not the Joe-verse, but a world of good guys fighting Cobras and now something else.

Cobra scientists unearth something that only Lovecraft knew about, a secret which will poke its way through several universes around the IDW publishing world.

Dr. Llund is an interesting, quickly developed character. Under the Cobra emblazoned parka, she is following a scientific lead inspired by literary notes. It is an interesting intersection of study. The melding of disciplines point to a strong educational background without spending much time exploring it.

Blood begets blood. In true Joe-verse style, science and armory combine to shed blood quickly. Fans will not be disappointed.  In fact the small details, like Raptor, Cesspool, drug dealing, and Cobra La are fun nods at the property histories.

The story starts Cobra strong. The G.I. Joe don’t show up until late in the story but that is a positive aspect. I’m rooting for Cobra but having Joe assist them may be necessary against this threat.

The art is nice. Named characters are distinct enough to follow throughout the story. The blue corp masses are not completely uniform but highlight the conformity.

While I am not a fan of the cross-over aspect of this series, it may be one that I pick up in trade upon conclusion. This is an enticing start.

Next week is Turtle time!

    • I took an early peek at the first part of the Infestation. I did not pick up the second part of the Joe Infestation 2 until this week.

This is a fun rushed resolution. I would have liked a little more development with Crystal Ball and his odd rogue agents, Raptor, Razor, and the other guy. Llund’s character was also quickly resolved into pain.

Since I’ve not read any of the rest of the Infestation comics, perhaps I’m missing characterization. As a two issue miniseries it is okay. I think it should fit into the larger framework but I cannot comment on it at the moment.

The Cobra part of the story was fun. The Joe part of the story felt gratuitous. They weren’t needed at all.

Perhaps I’ll pick up the non-Vampire, non-Zombie horror cross over in trade later on.
