Beyond the obvious, why does this book exist? The obvious is that the Avengers movie is coming out and the team that shows up in the movie does not appear together in the comics. So marketing would dictate that you want something that is recognizable to the movie-going public on the stands. You want the team they saw in the movies to be in the comics so it helps influence them to buy it. Great, thats all well and good, even though there has been no substantial increases in sales due to movies, but why does this book exist?

I’m struggling to find one and I can’t.

The new Zodiac? Extremely interesting. Could be a great new addition to the MU. But they could have easily have shown up in the Avengers or New Avengers and I probably would have enjoyed that more then the current incredibly awful H.A.M.M.E.R. storylines.

This reads as a forced circumstance. Not even Bendis, who is a good writer (normally, can we give a mulligan for the H.A.M.M.E.R. storyline?), can make this book come across as natural or believable that these characters would come together as a team. Hawkeye and Black Widow on a mission to Latveria? Why isn’t that in Secret Avengers? That’s the reason that book exists. So when Black Widow summons the Avengers, it should be the Secret Avengers that show up, not Iron Man and Thor.

And Hawkeye is leading the Secret Avengers now. Why doesn’t he come across as the leader here?

When did the Hulk become dumb again? I haven’t read the new series, beyond the first issue, and he wasn’t the “me hulk, me smash” kind of Hulk in that book. Speaking of the Hulk’s appearance in this book. The soldiers reaction to the Hulk is more of the forced feeling. He is shown saving one of the soldiers and they still attack? He’s shown fighting Aquarius, and they still attack? None of them are “It’s the Hulk, run”. Just doesn’t work.

Just rebuilding Avengers Tower? After the way the Avengers were treated during the HAMMER storyline? That makes no sense that it could just go up again and people would be cheering.

Nothing about this book comes across as anything but forced.

And because of that, it has no reason to exist.

At least now I know who I can blame for this god-awful new Hawkeye outfit. Why Bryan Hitch, why? I’m sure they told you to make it a cross between his MU outfit and the movie outfit (which is based off of Hitch’s Ultimates costume), but you could have done better then this. It’s horrible. CHANGE IT NOW!!!

The art in Avengers Assemble by Bagley is decent. Nothing spectacular but decent. He does a great job with Aquarius from Zodiac during the Hulk battle. The rest of it is just okay. I especially like how Hawkeye loses his glasses from one panel to the next during the chase scene.

I do have to mention the cover, this has been bugging me since first saw it months ago. You do not hold a bow like that. Hawkeye is the greatest marksman in the world, but even he wouldn’t be able to aim a bow with it positioned like Bagley has it.

Which is odd that Bagley has it wrong, he spent alot of time drawing Hawkeye in Thunderbolts.

I know the idea is to draw in new fans from the movie, and having a book with that team is part of that idea, but if this is their introduction to the world of the comics, they won’t be coming back.
