Hickman and Bodenheim introduce us to a dangerous world where security, or the lack of, is your biggest concern.

Art by: Ryan Bodenheim

It’s no.. uhm.. secret that I’m a huge Hickman fan. He’s probably my favorite writer working in comics today. This story is right up there with some of his best work.

Right from the opening we know it’s going to be an interesting and wild story. Hickman weaves a nice tale with various pieces crossing and even with the reveal at the end, you’re still left wondering who’s playing who. Is it one man running a side operation or is there more going on?

The solicitations hint at something much larger, that the pieces introduced in this issue will lead somewhere bigger. That’s not really revealed or hinted at in the first issue but even without the hints of the larger picture the story is still entertaining and hooks you right away.

Hickman has one of the best feels for design in comics today. If you’ve seen any of his solo work, you can see his hands over every inch of this story, including the art.

There isn’t a credit page, so it’s hard to tell who does what, but I have a feeling that it’s just Hickman and Bodenheim doing it all. The colors are great. It’s washed out in colors, each panel one color except for select few. And when those few have multiple colors it’s used for great effect. The one panel colors are mixed up, creating a different and unique look that draws the eye and keeps you interested.

Bodenheim’s line work is great. The first work I saw of his was on Marc Guggenheim’s Halycon. I liked it then and I really like it now. He’s got a great style and it won’t be long before he’s headlining a major book.

My only negative is with the lettering. There are numerous grammatical errors, using “you’re” instead of “your” and a couple of sentences with extra words. These are very distracting and ruin an otherwise perfect work.
