International Comic Scam

I hate reading stories like this one. Unfortunately, this made the local news this morning. They teased the story with a cover shot of the famous X-Men book and how a Canadian is trying to track down a Charlottean. It caught my attention, but I knew it was going to be sad. Here is the full story, essentially it is an online scam.  I hope these stories are rare, but I’m afraid they’re not.

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) – A Canadian man says someone in northeast Charlotte scammed him online and stole a valuable first edition comic book.

According to a Charlotte-Mecklenburg police report, a 37-year-old man from Ontario called police and said that he’d lost a comic book under false pretenses.

He told officers that he sold his #1 X-Men comic book to a person in Charlotte on eBay earlier this month.

The buyer, who lives on the 4600 block of Whispering Oaks Drive, agreed to pay the man $3,000 for the comic book, the report states.  The victim sent the comic book after the money was put into a PayPal account.

But the victim says the buyer did not sign for the package, but the U.S. Postal Service indicated that the package was delivered, but not signed for.

The buyer then canceled payment from the PayPal account, saying there were no signature on the package delivery.

Police are investigating, the report states.
