With the caliber of writers involved, I never thought they could produce a bad comic. Sure it may not be my favorite, may not be the best thing ever written, but I never thought they would produce a bad comic.

Then I read this one.

There is just so much wrong here. It’s not even a good fight comic. We don’t see the resolution of any match-ups, just pound and pound and move on. Is that what Versus is for? To see those fights expanded? So we have to read another book to actually see match-ups?

And let’s not even get into the continuity issues. Bendis wrote a couple of scenes in New Avengers, which is a book that most people that read AvX are already reading. Those scenes make absolutely zero sense with this issue. One of them is Storm in the mansion when Captain America gives his briefing. She walks out and now she’s asking the Black Panther, her husband, who was at the mansion with her, why he didn’t say anything to her? He didn’t have to. She was right next to him. And that same New Avengers issue has Red Hulk (can we please change that name) giving an army pep talk before Cage and the others jump out of the Helicarrier. Except that never happened. Colossus was thrown through the helicarrier and everyone fell out.

The script was bad. It tried so hard to be epic, but failed miserably. The only good point was Hope at the end, accepting the Phoenix force and running away.

There was definately some Avengers bias to the story. Cyclops and his crew come across as the bad guys here, the irrational ones that flip out instead of talking.

And the Scarlet Witch just calmly watching the tv?

The combatants were so crushed together, one giant mass, yet we never see anyone getting knocked out or seriously wounded. They’re instantly back in the fight. It doesn’t work. It doesn’t make sense. It’s a mess.

And the art. I’ve been complaining about John Romita Jr’s work for a long time now. Ever since he started on Avengers with Bendis, it’s just been bad. I used to like his work, but not now. Now it’s just bad. Half the characters are unrecognizable. Proportions and perspective is way off. It just looks bad.
