Quick Thought Reviews For 04/25/12

It’s time for some more random thoughts on a bunch of books that came out last week.

AvX: Versus #1
Published by: Marvel Comics
Story 1: Jason Aaron & Adam Kubert
Story 2: Kathryn & Stuat Immonen

Yep, this book was as big a waste as I feared. I had really high hopes for it though. I actually hoped that they would write real fights and not have any deus ex machina that would allow a “winner” but not have the loser actually lose. No such luck. It’s hard to picture these taking place during AvX issues as they fights in here are so over the top it’s ridiculous. Satellites that bring magnetic power from Jupiter? Sea monsters in the San Francisco Bay? Bad writing. Just bad writing. If they’re going to give us Avengers vs X-Men, give us real fights with real winners.

The New Deadwardians #2
Published by: Vertigo
Written by: Dan Abnett
Art by: I.N.J. Culbard

I’m liking this series so far. It’s a nice new take on the vampire/zombie story. The idea of taking the “cure” so the restless dead won’t see you is pretty interesting. Abnett writes a pretty good detective story as well. The art is pretty good but I’d like to see some more detail in the backgrounds.

Uncharted #6
Published by: DC Comics
Written by: Joshua Williamson
Penciled by: Sergio Sandoval

A bit jumpy in the narrative, but overall a decent ending to the Uncharted adventure. I enjoyed the series and wouldn’t mind seeing more. Sandoval’s work was very solid.

Secret Avengers #26
Published by: Marvel Comics
Written by: Rick Remender
Art by: Renato Guedes

I hate when events ruin the flow of a comic. Remender was starting to build something interesting with Secret Avengers and now we’re interupted for the AvX tie-in. And not a very good one at that. Felt wasted. Guedes art is good but it can be very messy as it was in this issue. Too messy.

Astonishing X-Men #49
Published by: Marvel Comics
Written by: Marjorie Liu
Art by: Mike Perkins

What a mess. Cluttered and overly chaotic fight. Hard to follow who was where and who they were fighting. Not choreographed well at all. Where did Karma come from? She appeared out of nowhere. Very odd and mess. Art was good, but hard to follow in parts.

Birds Of Prey #8
Published by: DC Comics
Written by: Duane Swierczynski
Penciled by: Jesus Saiz

Why is it that everytime I read a new issue of this book I feel like I’ve missed an issue? This just skips around so much it’s hard to follow and just feels like missing something month to month. None of it ends up making any sense. At least the art is decent enough.
