I really think Bendis is mailing this series in. It’s a badly written forced pairing of the Avengers that make up the movie roster. It’s got no substance, characters don’t even sound like they normally do. And now I realize that the plot is just to bring Thanos back into the Marvel Universe from wherever he’s been hiding out.

It just happens to be random chance that when Thanos is revealed to be in the after credits scene, the big bad behind the Chitauri, that Marvel produces a book with the movie cast and brings Thanos into it? Right…

So really, this book has no purpose. It’s like Marvel went to Bendis is said “we want to do a book that highlights the movie roster, help us out”. And this is what he came up with. For the first time, there’s an Avengers book I don’t want to read.

Maria Hill seems to be in charge, and is called out as “acting commander”, but Daisy Johnson is in charge of SHIELD. Why isn’t Daisy there? Oh wait, it’s because Maria is in the movie.

I know the hope of any of the movies is to bring in new readers (well okay, it’s not really, but that is a desired end result) and it makes sense to have a book that spotlights the movie characters. I can see that and I agree with it. But if you’re going to do that, make it a real book and make sure it’s good.

Avengers Assemble feels like it was assembled over a couple of days instead of a couple of weeks. It’s rushed, it’s badly written and it’s definately not Mark Bagley’s best work.
