Quick Thought Reviews For 05/16/12

Outside the world of comics, the Avengers movie broke 1 billion, but what happened in the world of comics?

Avengers vs X-Men #4
Published by: Marvel Comics
Written by: Jonathan Hickman
Penciled by: John Romita Jr.

Take a look at the last page and tell me this is good art? I’ll wait. Does anyone really think the art is good? Look at Colussus’ head. Where are Hawkeye’s glasses? What is the Widow looking at and since when does she wear her hair up? And I wish that I could say the art was the worse thing about this book. Well, with this issue it was. Hickman’s has been the strongest script yet in one of these issues. It’s still an incredibly bad event series though.

Saga #3
Published by: Image Comics
Written by: Brian K. Vaughn
Art by: Fiona Staples

I don’t know why but I love the visual of the “horrors”. Izabel, with the guts hanging out of the bottom, is just so cool looking. This is such a wild and crazy universe that Vaughn has created. Loving the feel of the series and the characters. Good stuff.

Uncanny X-Men #12
Published by: Marvel Comics
Written by: Kieron Gillen
Penciled by: Greg Land

There are some funny moments in this issue, most supplied by Namor. I like Hepzibah and glad she’s being used more but totally out of character. Her species mates for life and she’s currently mated with Warpath, why’s she oogling Namor? Besides the funny one-liners the rest of this issue is absolutely useless. Filler of the worst kind.

Fantastic Four #605.1
Published by: Marvel Comics
Written by: Jonathan Hickman
Art by: Mike Choi

What a great use of the .1, using it to give himself an extra issue and turning that issue into a kind of origin story of one of the Council of Reeds. Great twist on the creation of the Fantastic Four. The art by Choi was great, but it’s the story that really carries this issue.

Locke & Key: Clockworks #6
Published by: IDW Publishing
Written by: Joe Hill
Art by: Gabriel Rodriguez

If you’re not reading Locke & Key, what is wrong with you? One of the best books on the market. Hill’s story is excellent. So much good stuff in these pages and the duo of Hill and Rodriguez are perfect together. Such a well crafted series. There’s a ton of detail in the art. You have to pay attention to everything.

The Sixth Gun #22
Published by: Oni Press
Written by: Cullen Bunn
Art by: Brian Hurtt

Like Locke & Key, this is a series that must be read. Not one of the strongest issues, the middle was a bit hard to follow. Thought it was Jesup that Drake said “howdy” to, but wasn’t. That kind of thing. But still a solid issue. Some big revelations and the last page is a doozy.

Nightwing #9
Published by: DC Comics
Written by: Kyle Higgins
Penciled by: Eddy Barrows & Andres Guinaldo

With this big a connection to the Court, the Night Of The Owls should have been a much bigger part of Nightwing. The whole Court Of Owls should have been. I loved the origin of the name Grayson. Really like what Higgins did with Haly’s Circus. But the whole thing should have been more important as it seems to focus more on Nightwing personally then Batman.

Ultimate X-Men #11
Published by: Marvel Comics
Written by: Nick Spencer
Penciled by: Paco Medina

I really don’t want to be in the Ultimate universe right about now. What a mess that world is. Between what’s going on in the Ultimates and in the X-Men, the Earth is in shambles. When does this take place? It seems like it can’t be the same timeframe as the Ultimates, or Ultimate Spider-Man for that matter, because of the scope of the events in each book. They just don’t seem like the same universe.

One Response
    • I doubt the 1 billion dollars of Avengers will translate to higher than average Marvel sales. It should–we all know it should–but it won’t which we also know.
