Quick Thought Reviews For 05/23/12

What books did you read this week? Which did you enjoy? Which ones didn’t you?

Cobra #13
Published by: IDW Publishing
Written by: Mike Costa
Art by: Antonio Fuso

I like the new direction. Interesting mix of characters that Costa has assembled. I’m glad Flint is getting a bigger role in the Joe books. Duke’s settling into his new role pretty well. And is that Billy we see?

Teen Titans #9
Published by: DC Comics
Written by: Scott Lobdell
Penciled by: Ig Guara

Why do I feel like the Harvest/N.O.W.H.E.R.E. storyline could have been so much bigger and more important? The whole thing just felt weird. The Culling, the Ravagers, none of it really felt thought out, just thrown together. Brett Booth makes this book, he better be back penciling soon.

The Activity #6
Published by: Image Comics
Written by: Nathan Edmondson
Art by: Marc Laming

Nice little flashback tale to an early mission for Fiddler. The end is very interesting. This is a pretty good comic, very accurate and well written. Very fast paced, but good characterization. Laming’s art is nicely detailed.

Near Death #8
Published by: Image Comics
Written by: Jay Faerber
Art by: Simone Guglielmini

Interesting story. I like how the family keeps killing the other one through the generations. Interesting solution Markham comes up with and the conversation at the end is one that needs to be explored somemore. I don’t like how quickly Markham settled into the new city with the new confidant, happened too quickly. Where’d he meet this guy?

Voodoo #9
Published by: DC Comics
Written by: Josh Williamson
Art by: Sami Basri

Every new issue makes me think I’ve missed an issue. This is a bad series and just getting worse. Is Pris an alien hybrid? Why was a clone even created? Why does Helspont talk that bad? He’s supposed to be a super powerful entity? Sounds more like a child. The series has gone downhill since Williamson took over. Basri’s art is still nice but this was not the best issue.

Justice League Dark #9
Published by: DC Comics
Written by: Jeff Lemire
Art by: Mikel Janin

Just bad. Bad script, bad characterization. The dialogue was really bad. It wasn’t an issue about magic so much as it was super heroes that use magic instead of lasers & armor. There wasn’t a significant magical tone to the series, it just felt like super heroes. Disappointing.

X-Men #28
Published by: Marvel Comics
Written by: Victor Gischler
Art by: Will Conrad

Since when do Skrulls talk with human slang and human words? Talk about some bad dialogue. And this issue was an insult to Pixie. I can’t wait until Gischler is off this book.

One Response
    • Cobra #13 was a cool issue. I am curious how they will handle a son of the Commander, especially now that he is the son of the former Commander. The solo twin is convinced that he is chock-full o’ Cobra knowledge.  That should be fun.
