Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow #13

Swords and sorcery have nothing on blades and blood. Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow’s latest issue sets  a grim tone for the modern ninja story.

In Cobra #13, Duke recruited a Ronin to replace the lost Snake Eyes. After Helix has reported her mentor dead, the Joes are moving on without him. Elsewhere Snake Eyes has been reunited with his former sword brother and is setting a tone for their personal fights against Cobra.

“Serpent’s Shadow,” part 1! Snake Eyes returns to Japan to re-join the Arashikage clan to team with Storm Shadow. Their target: the new COBRA COMMANDER! Will the most dangerous JOE turn his back on his loyalties and his friends just to bring down the new COBRA leader? Only HE knows!
A nice entrance by a new female character
One of my favorite parts of this issue is not the moments between the titular characters–past or present—but instead a deviously simple looking character. I expect to see more from her in future issues. Her husband was a red ninja that died by Snake Eyes’ blade. Now she is assigned as his servant. Storm Shadow admits that she is devious and cunning.
Is this two new female characters introduced in two back to back issues? That seems odd but it could lead to something interesting in this case. An over glut of female martial artists could be overkill, but in all honesty, this series has always been flush with more flipping characters than needed. Perhaps it is fitting that the next ninja force–to replace the one Snake Eyes lost in issues past–will be a mostly female squad. Or perhaps it is fitting that Storm Shadow has a devious female of his own coiled in waiting. Either way could be interesting.
Robert Atkins is back on this series. He returned this issue. At a Chicago area comic signing, celebrating Snake Eyes #13, Atkins sketched a great Matt Trakker from M.A.S.K. It looks like Atkins is a M.A.S.K. fan. He’ll be posting sketches from the 80s property later this summer. So, while it is a far cry from the ninja title being reviewed, CLICK HERE, for a look at Atkins unleashed on Matt Trakker. If you need more ninja sketching from this great G.I. Joe artist, then CLICK HERE and check out Deadpool which is who Atkins calls a crazier Snake Eyes.

    • I like that they tacked Storm Shadow onto the title and didn’t start the series over. This could have been a #1 but I like it as the #13 to keep the series going on.
