Alpha: Spider-Man’s Sidekick

Debuting in Amazing Spider-Man #692 is Alpha, Spidey’s new sidekick.

Previously teased, today Marvel announced that Spider-Man will be getting a sidekick, a teen hero to mold in his image, going by the name of Alpha.

Fox News reported that Alpha is Andy Macguire, a high school student who gains powers through an accident caused by an invention of Peter Parkers.

“Part of it is that Spider-Man is grown up. He’s older, more seasoned, but young at heart. He’s still a young man, but he’s been around. It’s interesting because it flips the paradigm. Teen hero Spider-Man is now responsible for this teen hero sidekick. He’s responsible because one of his inventions caused this kid to get his powers. He’s directly responsible for the responsibility this kid now has with his new powers. He feels he has a responsibility to make sure this kid walks the right path, which won’t prove easy,” said Marvel editor-in-chief Axel Alonso.

This is an interesting direction to take Peter Parker. Spider-Man had always been a bit of a loner and it was only recently that he became more of a team player. But taking on a sidekick, teaching a new generation, is something that is new to Spidey.

    • I wanted Parker to take Arana or Spider-Woman (1990s) as a ward. Both needed his mentorship. He teamed up with both but couldn’t commit to them long term. Most likely the writers of Arana and the late 90s Spider-Woman couldn’t really effect the more popular title.

Having a side kick in the Amazing title should help him stick.

The code name Alpha makes it seem like this side kick or scientific accident could be repeated.  Will this be the first of many?

An older one legged Parker trained his daughter to be Spider-Girl so he should be able to train the new guy.

Even money says this side kick becomes a villain ala Red Hood, Winter Soldier, and all the rest.
