Quick Thought Reviews For The Week Of 06/20/12

Lots happening this week in the world of comics.

AvX #6
Published by: Marvel Comics
Written by: Jonathan Hickman
Penciled by: Olivier Coipel

At last, a good artist is on this event. Romita Jr’s art was HORRIBLE. This was the best issue of the series so far, and that’s not saying much. Hickman’s script was solid, even if some of the points weren’t. I liked that he paid attention to the Black Panther, that was a nice detail. Good to see K’un L’un finally making an appearance after the build-up in New Avengers. The reasoning of the President, and Captain America, wasn’t solid, it felt forced.. But then the whole idea behind the conflict has been forced.

X-Factor #238
Published by: Marvel Comics
Written by: Peter David
Art by: Paul Davidson

It always amazes me how well David handles this very large cast and does it so well. Each issue, each member gets some moment, some spotlight and it never comes across as forced. I like the exchanges between Madrox and Havok. Good stuff. Davidson is a solid artist but he’s not as good as Kirk or Luppachino.

Memorial #6
Published by: IDW Publishing
Written by: Chris Roberson
Art by: Rich Ellis

Em ended up being who I thought she would be, but was still a very nice resolution to the story. It set up future mini-series but will serve as a good ending if this is the only one published, which I hope it’s not. I’d like to see more Memorial.

Danger Club #2
Published by: Image Comics
Written by: Landry Walker
Art by: Eric Jones

I like this series, but there’s so much going on that hasn’t been explained. Walker does a good job keeping the reader in it, even though we’re lost most of the time. Jones art is good and he covers a range in this issue.

Nightwing #10
Published by: DC Comics
Written by: Kyle Higgins
Penciled by: Eddy Barrows & Geraldo Borges

I don’t like Nightwing in Gotham, he needs his own place to roost. Gotham isn’t big enough for him to expand. I would have liked to have seen him travel with Haly’s Circus. This Parable and his people are too close to the recently concluded Court Of Owls and what they wanted to do with Gotham.

Avenger’s Academy #32
Published by: Marvel Comics
Written by: Christos Gage
Penciled by: Timothy Green II

First off, I know Tom Grummett is a veteran, but Green’s pencils are fresher and give the book more pop. Can we rename X-23 please? An okay issue. Juston’s Sentinal is funny at times. Good tie-in with Laura’s past. Works well with why she’d want to stop Frost from destroying the Sentinal.

Birds Of Prey #10
Published by: DC Comics
Written by: Duane Swierczynski
Art by: Travel Foreman

Wow there are some ugly women in this issue. The art is just bad. The story isn’t much better. Each issue makes me think I missed a prior one, the way it just jumps in time. How did Starling get out of the front of the helicopter, to land with the others, and the pilot didn’t? Just badly plotted.
