In the lead-up to this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, Gazillion Entertainment, the developer behind the previously announced Marvel Heroes free-to-play massively multiplayer online (MMO) action RPG released fifteen minutes of new gameplay footage with commentary by Gazillion Entertainment CEO Dave Brevik.

    • Looks fun.  Free to play right?

      • Yup, it’s going to be an F2P, microtransaction-supported game.

I do wonder how the the devs will tune the character balancing and the faithfulness to the comics, especially since the list of selectable characters spans a wide range of abilities. If the preview is any indication, it looks like upper tier characters (in terms of raw power as portrayed in the comics) like the Hulk and Scarlet Witch will be nerfed significantly so that they don’t become too powerful in-game. I guess it can’t really be avoided.

        •  World Without Hulk Unlockable Game Play would fix the Hulk character. Otherwise, yeah, he’d honestly smash most folks.

        • In some cases, the way DC went about it makes the most sense with the nerfing issue.  Having the Hulk be relatively equal to Hawkeye doesn’t make sense.  With DC, they made you create characters, not play as the hero.

Sure people want to play as Captain America, etc.. but the nerfing issue comes into play.

          • Back when I was still active in the Freedom Force video game modding community, the most balanced custom Marvel/DC mods and add-ons countered the issue of having characters like the Hulk being way too overpowered by using a “points cap” system that limited the use of too many powerhouses in a team instead of nerfing (think of it as being similar to the salary cap that’s used to moderate professional sports team roster-building).

Mod programmers/designers like community legend DrMike2000 also implemented various creative drawbacks to using characters like the Hulk: the Hulk could be given a “berserker” attribute that makes him temporarily uncontrollable and a danger to his teammates after he receives a certain amount of damage, for example, or he reverts to the feeble Bruce Banner if he hasn’t received damage after a set amount of time or there are no enemies within the character’s detection radius.
