I have to be honest, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect from this comic. I figured it would be decent at best. An adaption of the upcoming Battle Beasts line of minimates, how could a comic could it end up being?

I was pleasantly surprised. This was a damn fine comic.

Curnow does a great job introducing the Beasts. Vorin, Gruntos and Merk are interesting. The opening sequence with Vorin talking about his childhood was great. It really felt like a warrior talking, doesn’t matter that it’s a Ram or a human, it sounded like how it should, a warrior.

Even the human pages are well done. There’s a nice energy to the pages, a nice element of fun and a bit of comedy but not overdone. The pages flow smoothly with the dialogue. And the introduction of the Beasts to Bliss? Extremely well down. No translations, we have to use the art to figure out what is being said. It was nice to see untranslatable text. Really helps drive home that these are aliens.

Schiti’s art? Dynamite. He does extremely well at showing the fights. Each animal fights like you would expect. The snakes slither, the birds fly and swoop. Very nicely choreographed. Excellent linework, excellent layouts. Where’s this guy been hiding?

For a book I wasn’t sure about, this was a great surprise.
