Reading the solicitations it sounded like this might have been another take on zombies. I’m tired of zombies. There’s only so much you can do with them. But it’s not about zombies, or at least not yet. And what it is about seems like it could be interesting. Revival centers around an area of Wisconsin where some people are not dying. They die, then they wake up.

The first issue doesn’t get into the Revivers much, it’s all set-up. Most first issues start off with opening hook, some kind of action piece that revolves around the plot. It’s meant to get the readers attention and show them what the series is going to be about. Revival doesn’t do that. It shows how much Seeley has grown as a writer that he’s able to introduce the first issue in a different way, but one that works well.

We don’t even meet our first Reviver until the end of the issue, and she’s a loon. Which sets up the last page twist. If the old lady is a Reviver and turns out loony, what will happen to Martha? The last page sequence is very effectively written and laid out. The rest of the issue is well done also, Seeley using conversations and overheard radio talk to explain to us the premise, what is going on in these towns.

The characters, well not fully developed yet, are interesting. Seeley sets up some nice dynamics and throws in a couple of funny background characters. It seems he’s more comfortable writing female characters, which is fine as he does a good job.

Revival is off to a good start and can’t wait to see where it goes.

Mike Norton’s pencils are excellent. Well laid out pages, well drawn figures and backgrounds. He does a good job all around. Excellent job on Dana and Martha. They look alike but different enough.

Revival #1 receives
4 out of 5
