Quick Thought Reviews For The Week Of 07/18/12

Captain Marvel #1, AvX #8 and so many other books.

Avengers Vs. X-Men #8
Published by: Marvel Comics
Written by: Brian Michael Bendis
Penciled by: Adam Kubert

So how exactly did Namor fall? He was defeated, not killed. So how did he fall? Why did the Phoenix Force leave him? That part made no sense. This was one giant fight. Waste of a book. What betrayal was Namor talking about? Kubert was a step down from Coipel’s work, but still 20 steps up from Romita Jrs.

Justice League #11
Published by: DC Comics
Written by: Geoff Johns
Penciled by: Jim Lee

I figured out what my problem with the Justice League book is, this doesn’t come across/feel like a team that has been operating together for 5 years. The fight that took up most of this issue (and used up way too many double page spreads) shouldn’t have happen if the team was together for 5 years, they would have worked out these differences long before now or would have fractured apart. Graves is an interesting villain though.

X-Factor #240
Published by: Marvel Comics
Written by: Peter David
Penciled by: Neil Edwards

This is consistently one of Marvel’s better books and this issue shows way. Layla Miller has always known the future. She doesn’t see it, she already has lived through it so she knows what happens (kind of like Starhawk from the old Guardians of the Galaxy and his “The One That Knows” riff). But now her powers are different and she sees potential futures. This issue is about her trying to affect one of those. David does a great job of showing the different potentials with an excellent use of color. And the ending, to see why she wanted to affect this one future, was great.
