Beware, might be some minor spoilers ahead.

Oeming has worked with Brian Michael Bendis on Powers for years. Powers is a different, and darker, take on super heroes. There’s definately a Powers vibe to The Victories. The tone of Victories is pretty dark and crazy, much more then Powers.

The book is about Faustus, a Batman type character combined with Spider-Man’s jokes. He’s a member of The Victories but we only meet Faustus and only get mentions of some of the other Victories. It’s an odd way to start off a book about the team, but Oeming deals with that in the first few pages. This is Faustus’ story.

I like the direction that Oeming is taking this. How Faustus deals with being late, the guilt he feels about still cracking jokes, is a good angle to take. Spider-Man jokes when he fights, but how can someone joke when they are too late?

With this title it appears that Oeming is going to provide a dark mirror to two of comic’s oldest characters, Batman and Spider-Man. With Spider-Man it’s the joking and with Batman it’s walking the razor’s edge between killing and not-killing.

The dialogue is a bit much in parts, it could be toned down a bit and still carry the same weight. But Oeming does do some good work with the script. The Judge, how quickly he accepts his fate if only his wife gets to go free, is very well written. This is a man that has come to terms with what he has done.

For a debut issue about a super group, it’s lacking in that group, but as a tale about Faustus, it works very well.

Oeming has a distinctive style. If you don’t like it, you won’t like the work in The Victories. But if you like it, this is Oeming doing what he wants to do and it works very well.
