I missed the first issue when it hit shelves but was able to find a copy at my back-up local comic store. And I’m glad I did.

I loved Sean Murphy’s pencils. Joe The Barbarian was a beautiful book. I knew I’d like the art in Punk Rock Jesus when it was first announced, I had never read Murphy’s other writing and I was a little unsure about how I’d like it here.

I shouldn’t have worried.

Punk Rock Jesus is a strong debut effort from Murphy as a creator and writer. The script is top notch and Murphy’s story is well crafted, plotted and told. Murphy really does a great job capturing the feel of being in a reality show. The characters are well rounded, well developed and fit the roles perfectly. You can see Thomas’ tough exterior cracking bit by bit as the series progresses.

There are just so many moment to like in the two issues. The polar bear is great. Gwen’s drinking makes sense and seeing how Slate and J2 manipulate everything is interesting. The end of the second issue, when Thomas admits why he’s working for J2, is very powerful and feels geniune.

You feel bad for Gwen, you feel frustrated like Dr. Epstein, you want to throttle Slate. Murphy does a great job making us care.

The theme of the book, and the religious ideas it gets into, are handled very well. I loved the part about Jesus being of Middle Eastern descent. Murphy doesn’t hold back and I know the views depicted could anger some people, but I think Murphy does a good job in presenting the views and themes of the books in a non-offensive way that feels real and works.

The art is just brilliant. Excellent characters, excellent layouts. Murphy is a master storyteller.

And I love the paper it’s printed on. Feels like an old school comic. It’s been so long since felt anything but the glossy paper, the newsprint is great.

    • I haven’t read this, but I did like Joe the Barbarian. I didn’t realize this was the same creator. That does make it sound better and worth trying. Thanks for mentioning the connection.
