Venom #22 goodbye, hello #23 and beyond
Published on Saturday, August 18, 2012 by

Rick Remender’s goodbye to agent Venom. Remender is moving on and Cullen Bunn will taking over the title to carry on with the trails and tribulations of Flash Thompson trying to be the best agent that the alien will let him be. This is a web swinging good bye. It is introspective. It wraps up. It makes a nice moment to move secret agent Venom forward.

The comic ends with a letter from Remender. He recaps bringing Venom to the comic shop shelf. Remender only expected the title to last for a few issues at best. He sounded truly thankful that the title lasted and accomplished what he wanted with the character under his tenure. The last page letter also served as a thank you tot he fans.

The last arc, Savage Six, included writer Cullen Bunn working on the script. In my past reviews I was curious how much was Remender and how much was Bunn. Enjoying the script I wanted to know what was in store for fans after Remender left the series for other writing assignments. Remender credited Bunn for doing the heavy lifting on the script to make it possible to keep Remender around at all.

The Story: The Savage Six took their shot – now Venom takes his! With his darkest secrets exposed to those he loves, Flash Thompson has one name on his hit list: Jack O’Lantern!

Tony Moore covers this book.
Declan Shalvey did a great job of continuing the interior art on the book.  Luckily,  Shalvey will come around again on art duties, but it will be a few issues.
Venom #23 will be Cullen Bunn’s first solo writing duty on this series. Solicited for August 22, this book is still keeping its fast pace, delivering issues quickly but with style. Patrick Zircher will be doing the art duties.
Venom #24, solicited for September 5th, continues bringing this title out fast and furious.
Venom #25 is solicited for September 19th. If this book stays on schedule with the new team then the bi-weekly schedule should allow fans to get their fill.
Venom #23
  • The Avengers task Venom with bringing in Damion Hellstrom – but who are THE MONSTERS OF EVIL?!
  • Rising star Cullen Bunn (WOLVERINE) teams with the Spider-verse’s newest young gun, Thony Silas (ENDS OF THE EARTH) for a new dawn in the life of Flash Thompson!

Recalling the Circle of Four, wherein Hellstrom and Doctor Strange protected the world outside of Las Vegas, sending Venom after the half demon makes sense in that it brings the character back into the comic. Sending Venom after Hellstrom also makes sense since both Marvel characters struggle with dualities.

Often new writers mean new directions for a title. It has been popular for writers to completely change titles. On occasion everything that happened before seems irrelevant after writers change. In this case, at least according to the brief story teases, it appears Cullen Bunn is going to root this series in the foundation begun by Rick Remender. Connecting upcoming issues back to Circle of Four clearly establishes that the history of this character in the past 22 comics is not now irrelevant.

As Bunn takes over Venom #23 and beyond, Rick Remender is still writing Secret Avengers #30 also due out on August 22, 2012.

Secret Avengers #30

High-spy-adventure! Hawkeye, Venom and Ant-Man must defeat an army of villains to grab Max Fury! • Secrets! The truth behind the Shadow Council’s ultimate plot! • Finally! The new Masters of Evil strike! • Paranoia! Black Widow knows who the traitor is, but can she get to her teammates in time to save them from his schemes?

While the Avengers have played almost no role in Venom’s stand alone title, it is nice to see him still part of the team from time to time. Going after Damion Hellstrom sounds like a mission that was recently given to Red Hulk  before Circle of Four.

Secret Avengers adds to the volume of secret agent Venom material for the fans.

Speaking of fans, Spider-Woman, Scarlet Spider, and Micronauts are all coming in upcoming months in the Venom title. If you have friends that are fans of anything Spider that are not reading the adventures of special agent Venom, then make sure you bring them in in the next few months.
