Quick Thought Reviews For The Week Of 08/22/12

So many comics, so little time and so much to talk about.

Teen Titans #12
Published by: DC Comics
Written by: Scott Lobdell
Penciled by: Brett Booth

Am I the only one that gets this feeling when reading DC Comics, the feeling of missing an issue or two? I know I haven’t missed an issue, but DC makes me think I have every time I read the new issue. With the Teen Titans it’s how quickly Superboy adapted to the team. They just escaped Harvest and N.O.W.H.E.R.E., and Superboy just became a friend and not enemy. Acts like he’s been around for a long time in this issue. And Cassie’s Silent Armor? There should have been more of a build-up to the full suit. Instead it feels like it was sprung on us. Nice Booth art though.

Bloodshot #2
Published by: Valiant Comics
Written by: Duane Swierczynski
Penciled by: Manuel Garcia

I like what Duane is setting up here, the twist he’s given the nanotech infused warrior. Seeing the different memory implanted family members as manifestations is a nice touch. Good art by Garcia, who I’ve found to be underrate.

Birds Of Prey #12
Published by: DC Comics
Written by: Duane Swierczynski
Penciled by: Cliff Richards

BoP should be an easy book to write. And you’d think it would play to Duane’s strengths. But it’s been floundering for awhile now. It’s one of those that makes me think I missed an issue every time I read a new one. What a waste of space Poison Ivy ended up being. What could have been a very well done storyline ended up being hokey and nothing new.

Wolverine #312
Published by: Marvel Comics
Written by: Jeph Loeb
Penciled by: Simone Bianchi

First Sabretooth comes back and he was never really killed, just a clone. Now Romulous reveals that Wolverine was really behind Weapon X? Can we just forget that these 4 issues by Loeb ever happened? Cullen Bunn and Paul Pelletier were starting to get some momentum and I was interested in seeing where it would go, but Loeb’s run interupted that. This has been awful. The only solace is that it ends soon and Bunn is back.

Revival #2
Published by: Image Comics
Written by: Tim Seeley
Art by: Mike Norton

I’m liking this so far. Seeley handles the revivers nicely. I like the bit of a twist to classic zombies. My only complaint is that the three sisters are very hard to tell apart. I kept losing who was who and it made for a hard read. This series shows promise though.

Secret Avengers #30
Published by: Marvel Comics
Written by: Rick Remender
Art by: Matteo Scalera

I didn’t like how Brubaker had left the title, leaving so much up in the air and unfinished. But Remender is doing a great job of showing us how an ongoing series should be taken over by the new writer. He started off with some of his stuff but now he’s going back and catching up and finishing what Brubaker had started. Excellent.

Captain Marvel #2
Published by: Marvel Comics
Written by: Kelly Sue DeConnick
Art by: Dexter Soy

I really don’t like Soy’s art at all and absolutely hate how they draw her hair when in costume, looks bad. This is an odd story to have for the second issue. Decent enough script.

The Punisher #14
Published by: Marvel Comics
Written by: Greg Rucka
Art by: Mico Suayan

I’ve never been a huge Punisher fan, never got any of his ongoing series until now. I love what Rucka is doing with him. Just amazing work for a character that, I think, is hard to write and make work as an ongoing in the first place. Just a great job by Rucka.

Read: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #13, Red Hood And The Outlaws #12, The Massive #3, Danger Girl & The Army Of Darkness #6, Fables #120, Danger Girl/G.I. Joe #2, Uncanny X-Men #17, Cobra #16, Resurrection Man #12, Ultimates #14

One Response
    • The new TMNT is a great series with an equally great micro-series tie in. Honestly, it is hard to review the book issue after issue because all I wind up saying is “wow this is great.” I feel like I’ve said it all before. Great new direction that weaves together the greatest hits of previous incarnations with plenty of new ideas. Just great.
