Out of all the Avengers vs X-Men tie-in issues, the only ones I’ve really liked have been in Wolverine And The X-Men. Last issues was good and this issue is even better.

With this issue Jason Aaron cements a position as one of the best team book writers currently working today, possibly ever.

There are so many defining character moments in this “before the battle” issue that it’s hard to believe it’s only 22 pages. A “before the battle” issue is usually alot of talking head moments, characters getting together and preparing themselves for the battle ahead. A lot of the time it can be cheesy, even come across as forced, as the writer tries to give each character their moment. The eve of battle is not a good time, it’s a sad time, a time of reflection and looking back.

That’s what Jason Aaron gives us with this issue, but in such a way that it’s… well, it’s excellent.

It’s sad and tender. Staggering. Lives are changed. Friendships renewed. There are so many moments that matter packed into one issue. Funny moments. Tender moments. Sad moments.

So much emotion. And Jorge Molina hits a grand slam with his art. I’ve enjoyed his relatively new style and hope to see more of it. He can pack so much emotion into a single panel.

Warbird’s sadness at being left behind. Kid Gladiator’s goodbye. So much powerful emotion in a scene of just images. Iceman and Wolverine. All the Iceman and Kitty scenes. Even the Husk/Toad interactions.

But the last page, the students watching the teachers leave to fight the Phoenix.

Aaron outdid himself. This is probably the best book on the market today, no contest.
