The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles return to television on Sep. 29th in an all new animated adventure. They have already returned to the toy aisle and other merchandise so some of the mystery may be revealed. In my Turtle experience I’ve read and watched a few differing origin stories for the green brotherhood. The turtles remain barely changed as typical pet turtles that become something more. Sometimes they are a lab experiment, sometimes they are a loose in a sewer. Originally they were a spoof on Marvel’s Daredevil’s origin. They remain barely changed—luckily the M. Bay movie project that made major back story changes has been scrapped.

One character that has had a few distinctly different stories is the sage like Master Splinter. He is always a guide and surrogate father for the adopted sons. Is he a rat that has become human? Is he a human that has become a rat? Is he a reincarnation? Is he just another lab experiment? Time traveler? What?

Looking at the new Ninja Turtles previews and ads I am curious about Splinter.

Today while shopping at Wal-Mart I picked up a Turtle activity book which revealed the origin of Splinter as a coloring book page. It leaves me curious about the rest of the story. A young boy and his pet turtles. The day he became a rat. It is a variation on an origin story that has been used before but it seems to missing the requisite ninjaness. I am curious how this will work.

Cartoon Network is currently lining up some great DC Nation cartoons. It is a great time for cartoon fandom. The IDW Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and the related Micro-Series is a great new interpretation. The toys look great. Overall I am hopeful.

The toys advertise ninja arsenal included. For Splinter that is just a walking stick, unlike the Turtles that are packed with ninja gear. Hopefully that will be the only disappointment for Splinter fans at the end of the week after the Nickelodeon premiered.

Sep 29th the new show premieres!
