Bloodshot #3
Published on Tuesday, September 25, 2012 by

No longer just a man looking for his past, the new Bloodshot title also has the historyless character haunted by fragments of fake lives. It is a nice addition. The haunting phantom images are pieces of cover identities that were implanted into Bloodshot to keep him feeling human and set him toward unhuman goals. Now, the nanotechnology that bestows powers upon the pale hero are feeding him pieces of information. It is enough to make a warrior go insane or talk to himself.

I read this character back in 1993 and 1994 and it was fun. It was Punisher with a dash of Captain America. It was nice. Somehow it felt familiar and different at the same time. I only held an impression of a memory all these years later. Re-reading it has been fun.

Reading the new series is something else completely. The new Bloodshot #3 helps show how different this character is from the 1993 version. The newer Bloodshot is still talking to machines but in a much more sophisticated manner. In the 2012 #3 Bloodshot can speak through communication devices and make a truly hands free telephone call. Bloodshot also has an early warning system that is much creepier and sensical than Spider-Sense.

The main difference between the new run and its predecessor, besides redefining the powers, is the visual sense of the book. The 1993 Bloodshot was fairly typical visually on the page. While not exclusively following the Wally Wood example many of the panels have that standard 90s comics feel. Without the pouches and unrealistic muscle structure of 90s independent comics the ’93 run feels like a 90s comic the same way early Will Smith feels like Fresh Prince.

Visually the 2012 Bloodshot takes more liberties. The ghosting of nano-inspired hallucinations reads clearly and distinctly. When Bloodshot turns inside his own mind and starts to manipulate memories it also reads clearly. Reality and mentality both read clearly.

While Duane Swierczynski has made this character his own in the new run it seems to be Manual Garcia and Aruro Lozzi that have really redefined this comic.

I mention the earlier run pointedly since a hardcover release will make Bloodshot #1-8 available again in case you do not have it in your back issue boxes. It is fun to re-read the adventures of the MI6 special agent version of this character, however reading the earlier material is not required to enjoy this new series.

So far Bloodshot is keeping to himself. He has enough problems on his own. He has yet to bump into the Harbringer cast, a Geomancer, Archer & Armstrong, or Ninjak. The larger Valiant universe is shaping up in other titles and will eventually bring characters together. Since Ninjak is popping up in other titles that may be soon.

Bloodshot is on the run, but the voices inside his head only have one destination in mind – home. Is the woman that he finds there the wife that he’s been dreaming of – or the gateway to a much larger mystery? Plus, what horrors did Project Rising Spirit unleash on the town of Atlee, Nevada? And can their latest experiment take out Bloodshot before he catches up to the men who made him into a billion-dollar weapons project? There’s a new villain waiting in the wings, and she’s about to inflict more damage than any gun, bomb or missile imaginable. Introducing Pulse!

Heroes aren’t born. They’re built. Upgrade to the next level of the Valiant Universe when Bloodshot #3 goes on the offensive this September 5th – in stores the same day as Archer & Armstrong #2!

Pick up this super soldier book while it is still on the comic shop shelves. It is a fun starting point for readers coming new to the series but it is most rewarding for readers that picked up the first 2 issues already.

What dark secret connects Project Rising Spirit and Toyo Harada’s Harbinger Foundation?

Bloodshot is the creation of Project Rising Spirit, and for years they’ve loaned him out to the U.S. government for the kinds of insane, blood-splattered missions that only a nanite-enhanced commando could possibly survive. But those will be nothing compared to the horrors that await him inside the heavily fortified walls of PRS itself, whose subterranean levels are populated by failed “projects” that kill and maim for fun. And God help anyone who dares pry open the doors to the “nursery”…

If you’ve been hesitating, waiting for the right moment to jump on board Bloodshot – the series Robot 6/Comic Book Resources calls “simply mind bending” – here’s that moment! After this issue, there might not be too many characters left alive…
