The Ride: Southern Gothic #1

More fun road tales of babes and bullets from 12 Gauge comics.I.C.E., Loose Ends, and other independent comics have caught our attention. The Ride is another great story platform. 48 pages of black and white action comprised of three stories centering around  the muscular Camero.

Issue #1 features a line up of creators that have had hits all over the comic companies and genres.  Rick Leonardi (UNCANNY X-MEN), David Lapham (STRAY BULLETS), Ron Marz (GREEN LANTERN), Nathan Edmondson (WHO IS JAKE ELLIS?), Paul Azaceta (AMAZING SPIDER-MAN) and more following the adventure of fast cars and wild people.

The first two stories feel like stand alone shorts that could have been an EC Tales quick moral tale. Picture Tales From the Crypt in the driver’s seat of a Camero.

The third story has a quick action movie twist that will make you pick up issue #2.

With this line up of writers and artists it is not surprising that this a good looking and well crafted book.

“Perfect Circle” Story 1 Written by Nathan Edmondson, Art by Paul Azaceta
“Money Shot” Story 2 Written by Jody LeHeup, Art by David Lapham
“Paid in Full” Written by Ron Marz, Art by Rick Leonardi

This is a comic that drips with cool. It should be sponsored by Camero. This issue reminds me of The Hire, a series of short films sponsored by BMW and BMWFilms.com presenting Clive Owen and cool BMW cars having fun short adventures with various writers and directors as an ad for the company. It gave fans of John Woo, Ang Lee, Tony Scott, Guy Ritchie, and others a chance to watch these legendary directors do both an action movie and a car commercial at the same time.

That odd, hard to find series on DVD is the closest analogue I can find to 12 Gauge’s The Ride. Fast paced fun. Check it out and pick up the second issue in October.
