PREVIEW | New G.I. Joe: Retaliation trailer debuts online

Updated international trailer for the delayed and embattled production shows new footage and what looks to be an expanded role for Channing Tatum’s “Duke” character.

The problems plaguing Paramount Pictures’ G.I. Joe: Retaliation, the sequel to 2009’s G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, have been previously documented and commented on in this site. Originally intended for a June 29, 2012 premiere, the studio pushed back the project’s release a full nine months a little over four weeks before its scheduled debut, ostensibly to allow for 2D to stereo 3D conversion and capitalize on the current 3D movie trend. Rumors persisted however, that the delay was also for extensive retooling primarily motivated by the overwhelmingly negative reactions to the film from test audiences and the decision to re-shoot scenes to accommodate an expanded role for actor Channing Tatum, whose profile and bankability have risen with the generally-positive reviews his performances have received in recent films such as Haywire, 21 Jump Street, and Magic Mike—word was that director John Chu originally minimized the returning Tatum’s part to distance G.I. Joe: Retaliation from its critically-scorned predecessor. The new international trailer features material seen in previously released promotional videos as well as new footage that highlights Tatum’s bolstered presence in the film.

G.I. Joe: Retaliation is set to premiere on March 29, 2013 and stars Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson as Roadblock, Channing Tatum as Duke, Bruce Willis as Joe Colton, Ray Park as Snake-Eyes, Lee Byung-hun as Storm-Shadow, Adrianne Palicki as Lady Jaye, Ray Stevenson as Firefly, Arnold Vosloo as Zartan, Elodie Yung as Jinx, and RZA as the Blind Master.
