News Round-Up For 10/29/12
Published on Friday, November 2, 2012 by

The bigs news was Disney buying Star Wars. What else was newsworthy? Bryan Singer is back with the X-Men, Jim Lee does cars, Alpha returns, Jamie Foxx gets electric and more Marvel Now! teasers.

Disney Buys Star Wars
The biggest news in a long time was the announcement that Lucasfilm was bought by Disney for 4 billion dollars. This was reported literally everywhere and was all over Facebook and other social media sites. The internet was abuzz about what could possibly be the biggest geek related announcement ever. Oh wait, it got topped by the announcement of new Star Wars movies starting with episode 7 in 2015. What does this mean for the Expanded Universe line of books from Del Rey? The Clone Wars cartoon on Cartoon Network? Dark Horse Comics series of books (since Disney owns Marvel Comics) and even the action figures from Hasbro? No one knows but stay tuned in the weeks and months ahead to find out, but already I’m excited for the idea of new Star Wars in 2015.

Singer Back With The X-Men
Deadline reported today that Bryan Singer signed a deal with 20th Century Fox to return to the characters he made famous, at least in the movies. Bryan Singer, who directed the first two X-Men movies, will return to direct the sequel to X-Men: First Class. Matthew Vaughn, director of First Class, originally set to direct the sequel will remain on as a producer. Singer has been involved in writing the screenplay that will feature the return of much of the First Class cast. The studio hopes to have the movie out on July 18th, 2014. The title of the sequel will be familiar to fans of the X-Men, Days of Future Past.

No Heir To The Empire?
With the announcement of more Star Wars movies coming, fan speculation ran rampart with many wondering if we’ll see the classic expanded universe novels The Thrawn Trilogy on the big screen. This would be happy news for many Star Wars fans. The trilogy, written by Timonthy Zahn, took place 5 years after Return of the Jedi and basically started the novel side of the Expanded Universe and created the “official” canon for post-Return that everything else has built off of. It created the Solo twins, Jaina and Jacen, and introduced us to Mara Jade.

Even though Mark Hamil, Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher are too old to play the characters in the novels, the fans hoped there would be some form of the Thrawn Trilogy coming. Doesn’t appear to be happening.

E! Online has quoted an unidentified Lucasfilm source as saying that episode 7 will be a new plot that hasn’t been seen before. This would mean that the expanded universe will be null and void.

The new movie could still put in some nods to the Thrawn Trilogy (maybe in the form of Jacen and Jaina as the new main characters) or it could be completely original.

Jim Lee Does Cars?
Did you know that Jim Lee did custom paint jobs on some Kia’s for the SEMA show? No? Neither did I. A couple weeks ago Newsarama revealed the Batman inspired Kia Optima and on Halloween they showed off the rest of the cars.

Along with the Batmobile there is a Flash inspired Forte Koup, the Green Lantern Soul, Aquaman’s Rio 5-Door, and Cyborg’s Forte 5-Door

The cars are intended to raise awareness for DC’s “We Can Be Heroes” campaign to help fight the hunger crisis in the Horn of Africa.

The Return Of Alpha
After his brief appearance in the pages of Spider-Man, readers were left wondering what would become of Alpha. Would he be just a 3 part arc and never heard from again? Would he return to comics? USA Today is reporting that Andy Maguire returns in Spider-Man #700 and events change his relationship with Peter Parker leading to the debut of the 5 issue Alpha mini-series by Joshua Hale Fialkov with Nuno Plati on art. The mini-series sends Alpha to Pittsburgh and on a quest to restore his powers. Powers that Parker took from him because he was irresponsible with them.

Will the mini-series lead to Alpha being a better hero?

Jamie Foxx Is Electrifying
Will the actor be playing Electro in the sequel to Amazing Spider-Man? Rumors started circulating and Comic Book Resources is reported that director Marc Webb was asked directly during a press conference to promote the Blu-Ray DVD release of the movie.

“We’ll see. I think Jamie Foxx is electrifying. I think Jamie Foxx is one of the most brilliant actors that we have around today. He’s such a great character actor. He’s a really brilliant guy and I would love to work with him, so you’ll be hearing more on that shortly, I’m sure,” Webb said.

Amazing Spider-Man 2 is out May 2, 2014.

More Marvel Now! teasers
This week Marvel released two new teasers following along the lines of the previous Marvel Now! ones. The trend is to release a one word teaser with creative team attached, let the speculation wild and reveal the new books in the coming weeks. And the speculation machine is running wild with these two.

Newsarama got the first teaser. “Fearless” by Cullen Bunn and Will Sliney (currently the artist on the MacGyver mini-series from Image). One week from the teaser’s release, that would be next Thursday, Newsarama said they will have the first interview with the team on the new book. Cullen Bunn was co-writer of the Fear Itself follow-up mini-series ‘The Fearless’ which centered on Valkyrie. Bunn has said that he would like to revisit the character and the plot threads left open in the mini-series. This seems to point towards a Valkyrie series, which would make sense considering the heightened profile of the character and would give Marvel 4 monthly series starring female characters (Journey Into Mystery stars Sif, Red She-Hulk, Captain Marvel and Valkyrie) if true.

One Response
    • Brian Singer didn’t leave X-Men for long. He worked in some capacity on First Class and Wolverine. I believe he was an executive producer.

Jamie Foxx would be good as Electro. It’d be a new take on the character but he can pull it off.

I’m glad they’re bringing Alpha back to be more than a three episode fluke but I really don’t care about the character. Bring back Vermin! That would get my attention.
