NEWS: Disney in talks to buy Hasbro?
Published on Monday, November 5, 2012 by
MTV report points to alleged plans for Disney to acquire the Rhode Island-based toy and game company.

A report based on “good authority” posted on the MTV Geek news site claims that the Walt Disney Co. is in serious talks to acquire toy and game-maker Hasbro, which owns a number of popular multimedia properties such as G.I. Joe, the Transformers, and My Little Pony. Hasbro’s recent forays into film and television have met with mixed-success—The Transformers films have generally done well with audiences despite lukewarm critical reviews, but its Hub premium cable channel has struggled to find an audience since its 2010 launch and the problems plaguing the production and reception of the films based on its G.I. Joe and Battleship toys have been well-documented.

The rumor comes on the heels of Disney’s recent acquisition of Lucasfilm for a little over $4 billion.

The Comixverse will post updates on this story as it develops.

    • Is this just a ‘net rumor reacting to Star Wars being bought by the house of mouse or is this a real news story? I suppose only time will tell.

Since many of Hasbro’s properties are sitting idle maybe it is time for someone new to take control. Bring back M.A.S.K., Jem, and more G.I. Joe!

      • Probably a little bit of both, in that discussions probably have taken place at some level about Disney acquiring Hasbro for some time now, but the story didn’t really get any legs until after the news of Disney buying Lucasfilm broke. And just like in that previous deal, there are some pretty big implications comics-wise: Does IDW Publishing get to keep the GI Joe and Transformers licenses when they inevitably lapse?

        • While I have very little stake or interest in who publishes the Star Wars comics, I would hate to see G.I. Joe leave IDW. They’re doing well and should keep on keepin’ on.

That being said, I still think that this could just be a bit of speculation and want to see more substantiation.

By the way, Disney should bring back Gargoyles, Buzz Lightyear of Star Command, Incredibles, and Darkwing Duck comics since it owns Marvel. Then make some Lucas Ranch worthy movies of at least two of those products. They could also stick together an afternoon pack of cartoons on ABC–since they also own that. They can do that with the downtime while fans wait to see if Walt’s world is really trying to buy up Hasbro and its holdings.

    • MSN Money has a nice, sober analysis of the potential deal in this article. The prime motivation for Disney to acquire Hasbro might be rooted in the fact that Hasbro has the toy licenses for both the MCI (Marvel Characters, Inc.) and the Lucasfilm characters. Without Hasbro (or more accurately, without the toy licenses), Disney might not be getting the best return they can potentially make out of the $8+ billion they just spent on buying up Marvel and Star Wars.
