My favorite writer, Jonathan Hickman, on my favorite team, the Avengers. Was this a match made in heaven?

When I heard Hickman was taking over Avengers I got very excited. I loved his work on Fantastic Four and Secret Warriors. He did what I think all ongoing comics should be, multi-year epics. Give me 4-6 issue arcs that are just chapters in a large scale epic story. I wanted to see what he could do with my favorite super team.

It’s only the first issue, but I’m in love.

My god, how many huge moments can you pack into a single issue?

Aleph telling Cap to yield and he doesn’t?

The “assemble at dawn” line? Chills. How can you not get chills over that scene?

This is what an Avengers book should be. Epic moments, funny one-liners (the Widow’s “step away from the man with all the money”). I just know I’m going to love every minute of Hickman’s run. Is the second issue out yet?

Hickman is an artist himself and has an amazing design sense. Can see elements of that in this issue with the double page title spread and the very interesting logo map. This could be extremely interesting. I like how different groups of signals radiate out from the main Avengers: Captain America, Iron Man, Thor and Hulk. Only some of them are filled at the end. Be interesting to try to figure out which symbol belongs to who and why they are grouped with a particular Avengers.

The art by Opena was excellent. Hulk appears a little thin at points, but overall it was great. Very detailed. Unique. Captured the epic moments perfectly.

This is what a first issue should be.
