Quick Thoughts For The Week Of 12/12/12

Books, books and more books. Lots to read, lots to talk about.

Red Hood & The Outlaws #14
Published by: DC Comics
Written by: Scott Lobdell
Art by: Pascal Alixe

Love the way Superman is handled here. Just the way I think he should be. Slightly off, alien, stuck-up. Good stuff. Too bad the rest wasn’t as good. Rest of the story was bland and the art was horrible. That last page? Totally messed up scale and the police, are they busting through a door or wall? Bad. Really bad.

Fantastic Four #2
Published by: Marvel Comics
Written by: Matt Fraction
Penciled by: Mark Bagley

This whole “we’re only going to be gone for 4 minutes but don’t want to leave the world without a Fantastic Four” is really dumb. The more it develops, the worst it ends up coming across. The idea was okay at first, sounded strange and not really making sense, but it’s Matt Fraction and I had faith he could make it work in a way that makes sense. Nope. Not happening.

Secret Avengers #34
Published by: Marvel Comics
Written by: Rick Remender
Art by: Matteo Scalera

In this day and age of the 4-6 issue arc, so it can be collected in a trade paperback edition, Rick Remender is a throwback. He still has arcs, but they last 8 issues or more. And I love it. Except… Except when something like what is going on in Secret Avengers happens. This trip to Earth 666? It comes across as just filler and it distracts from the rest of the story about the Descendents.

A+X #2
Published by: Marvel Comics
Written by: Chris Bachalo & Peter David
Art by: Chris Bachalo & Mik Del Mundo

I don’t usually like books like this one. The stories have no point, are just little one-offs done for just fun? And well that can be a good thing, I like my stories to have meaning. Little short stories like this? Not my cup of tea. But I liked both the stories in this issue. The Rogue/Black Widow was nice, with some good little moments. The Iron Man/Kitty Pryde was very good. People forget that Kitty is a genius and her way of dealing with the phasing brood was great. Very smart. Love the ending.

Read: Winter Soldier #13, The Activity #9 & 10, Thor: God of Thunder #2, Iron Man #4, World’s Finest #6 & 7
