It isn’t all New 52 at DC
Published on Sunday, January 20, 2013 by

15 months ago DC committed to a nearly complete overhaul of its comics universe, collapsing Wildstorm into the main DC Universe, restarting the timeline for books, and bringing the heroes together. It was bold. It was sloppy at times. It has been the source of much internet speculation. The reboot allowed DC to pull ahead of Marvel in sales temporarily before returning to the #2 slot. 52 brought about new titles, some of which were cancelled along the way to make room for more titles. Luckily, a few comics have managed to exist outside of the New 52. I’m not writing about the Green Lantern’s soft reboot that seems to stick to pre-52 to some degree, but instead about a great comic that is completely outside of 52 for  DC fans that don’t feel like investing in so many books and restarted headaches to mess with 52.

Perhaps 52’s continuity will last a little longer before the inevitable reboot. The comics are being collected in trades for enthusiasts that want to pick up the best stories collected and not chase floppies. However, some DC fans are still waiting out this reboot, lurking in the shadows of their local comic shops, grumbling, missing the DC characters. To those fans, the ones that won’t listen to how good this book or that book is now, to those fans I recommend: Batman Beyond Unlimited.

Multiple stories weaving through each issue pulls together  a host of characters and creators from around the DC Universe.

Each monthly installment of Batman Beyond Unlimited gives the reader 48 pages of excitement for $3.99. That is an action packed price point, especially compared to the other DC and Marvel prices per page. Batman Beyond may be set 50 years from now, but it fits this fans modest wallet at the moment without asking me to buy two titles a month, or continuing into 52 other titles that I need to track down occasionally stretching the comic budget beyond unlimited.

The new year of 2013 will continue strong for Batman Beyond Unlimited. This title is a great choice for any DC fan that has felt left out over the past 52+ weeks and latest event. One of the finest aspect of Batman Beyond Unlimited is that is not tied to any DC Universe continuity but instead exists in its own envelope of time, space, and history 50 years from now. The main Bat story, 10,000 Clowns, will be collected in a trade available May 21, 2013. Otherwise, consult your local comic shop about this slice of non-52 DC.
