Comics-centric highlights of the two-day popular geek culture celebration include Q&A sessions with Stan Lee and Neal Adams and live sketch duels featuring Phil Jimenez, Alex Maleev, Steve Epting, David Finch, Stephen Sadowski, and more.
Fan Expo Vancouver organizers released on Friday the schedule, exhibitor, and artist alley details for this year’s Fan Expo Vancouver (April 20–21, Vancouver Convention Centre, Vancouver, BC). Scheduled comics-themed highlights of Day 1 (Saturday, April 20) include a Photo Ops session with superhero comics legend Stan Lee (12:00 PM, Photo Ops area, $55), a sketch duel (1:00 PM, Room #2) between Stephen Sadowski (JSA, Warlord of Mars) and Phil Jimenez (Infinite Crisis, Wonder Woman), a Stan Lee Q&A session (4:00 PM, Ballroom A), a sketch duel (4:00 PM, Room #2) between Steve Epting (Future Foundation, Captain America) and Alex Maleev (Daredevil, Moon Knight), the “Comic to Flick: How a Comic Book Becomes a Movie” panel (5:00 PM, Room #2), and a panel entitled “Spotlight on Neal Adams” (6:00 PM, Room #2). The primary comics-related activity scheduled for Day 2 (Sunday, April 21) is a sketch duel (1:00 PM, Meeting Room #2) between David Finch (Batman: The Dark Knight, Ultimate X-Men) and an artist to be announced. In addition, an exclusive Fan Expo Vancouver 2013 edition of Marvel Comics’ Superior Spider-Man #8 featuring art by Humberto Ramos will be available for purchase only at the Expo.
Non-comics themed highlights include photo ops, autograph sessions, and panels featuring the event’s many film, television, and music special guests, a Voice-Acting Workshop presented by the Vancouver Film School, a Star Wars Kids Hour organized by members of the local chapter of the 501st Legion, a Back to the Future DeLorean time machine exhibit sanctioned by the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research, an official LEGO Canada exhibit, and numerous anime-themed contests and discussion panels including Q&A sessions with the English voice casts of Death Note and Black Lagoon.
Of course, attendees can interact with the Fan Expo Vancouver special guests at their tables in between scheduled events and activities. There will also be 81 exhibitors at Fan Expo Vancouver, ranging from independent publishers like Arcana Studios and Rue Morgue, to comics/collectibles retailers such as Golden Age Collectibles and Toy Traders, to educational institutions like the Vancouver Institute of Media Arts. The Artist Alley will feature 79 booths and tables manned by local studios and artists where attendees can pick up original art or just talk and have a fun time with other fans of the comics medium. The Canadian Video Game Awards will also be held at the same venue on April 20 (Red Carpet and VIP Reception 6:45 PM; Awards Ceremony 8:15 PM), with separate tickets on sale for $29. The official Fan Expo Vancouver After-Party will be held on April 20, 10:00 PM at the Vancouver FanClub (tickets at $8 for Fan Expo Vancouver pass holders, $12 for the general public).
