New Artist’s Editions announced

IDW Publishing revealed its plans for new Artist’s Editions during a Saturday morning NYCC panel. As described on the IDW site, an Artist’s Edition

… presents complete stories with each page scanned from the actual original art. While appearing to be in black & white, each page has been scanned in COLOR to mimic as closely as possible the experience of viewing the actual original art—for example, you are able to clearly see paste-overs, blue pencils in the art, editorial notes, art corrections. Each page is printed the same size as drawn, and the paper selected is as close as possible to the original art board.

As an example of how this might look, below are images taken from Joe Kubert’s Tor: Artist’s Edition, released last month:

  • Charles Schulz’ Peanuts: Artist’s Edition
  • Jack Kirby’s New Gods: Artist’s Edition
  • The Steranko Nick Fury, Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.: Artist’s Edition
  • The Steranko Nick Fury & Captain America: Artist’s Edition
  • Dave Gibbons’ Watchmen: Artifact Edition

Some notes:

  • Jack Kirby’s New Gods: Artist’s Edition will include issues #2, 5, 6, 7, and 8 of the 1971 series along with bonus material.
  • The Steranko Nick Fury, Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.: Artist’s Edition will feature twelve stories taken from Marvel’s Strange Tales #151–162. Interior previews can be viewed here.
  • The Steranko Nick Fury & Captain America: Artist’s Edition will feature the Nick Fury stories from Strange Tales #163–168 as well as issues #1, 3, and 5 of Marvel’s Nick Fury, Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.
  • Unlike the other announced titles, Dave Gibbons’ Watchmen: Artifact Edition will not include complete stories (hence the Artifact Edition designation), but will still include over 150 pages of scanned original art.

It should be worth noting that IDW’s David Mazzucchelli’s Daredevil Born Again: Artist’s Edition won the 2013 Eisner Award for Best Archival Collection/Project—Comic Books as well as the 2013 Harvey Award for Best Domestic Reprint Project.

IDW to reissue Westlake’s Parker novels as illustrated prose hardcovers

Writer-artist Darwyn Cooke has found much success with his graphic novel adaptations of Donald Westlake’s Parker novels (which Westlake wrote under the pseudonym Richard Stark), winning the 2013 Eisner Award for Best Adaptation from Another Medium and the 2013 Harvey Award for Best Graphic Album—Original with his work on Richard Stark’s Parker: The Score.

Darwyn Cooke's recent adaptations of the Parker books count as our favorite back-issue shelf find of the year.

Darwyn Cooke’s graphic novel adaptations of the Parker books have found much critical acclaim, with the first three releases earning five Eisner Awards between them.

For those looking for a more traditional reissue of Westlake’s novels but are still interested in seeing Cooke’s Parker-inspired art, IDW is offering a new option: The publisher will be reprinting the original prose books in hardcover with full-color illustration plates by Cooke. These books will feature all-new art from Cooke, in a style that will be quite distinct from his graphic design influenced-approach in the graphic novels. The first book is set to be released in second quarter 2014.

Darwyn Cooke’s fourth Richard Stark’s Parker graphic novel, Slayground, is set for a December release.

My Little Pony: Friends Forever teased?

As noted by Bleeding Cool’s Rich Johnston, one of the throwaway comments made by IDW prez Chris Ryall during Saturday morning’s panel hinted at a second ongoing My Little Pony series called My Little Pony: Friends Forever, set for a 2014 launch.
