Casey Jones has appeared in some form in every version of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comics and cartoons. In the most recent Nickelodeon animated TV series, Casey, like April O’Neil, has been redesigned as a high school student.

Casey is packaged in the standard Playmates Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles packaging, although there is a sticker noting that the character is seen in season 2 of the Nickelodeon show. The insert also notes that he is a “Street Banging Vigilante,” whatever that means.

The back of the package has a bio card which features an image of Casey Jones from the animated show. It also has a cross sell gallery of some of the other heroes and villains available in the toyline.

The biographical information on the card reiterates the official product description listed above.

Design and Articulation

Playmates’ sculptors did a great job in capturing Casey’s look from the show, from the hooded head down to the bandanna shoved in the back pocket of his jeans to the (non-functional) roller blades on the figure’s feet. The hockey mask is removable (more on that below) and underneath the mask is Casey’s painted visage. The figure’s left shoulder has a small, spiked shoulder pad and the left forearm features a permanently attached and dangerous-looking hockey goalie blocker. Casey’s legs sport improvised, asymmetrical armor. There are small wrinkles and seams sculpted on the figure to suggest the different fabrics and materials of the character’s costume.

The figure is quite poseable too, featuring the following points of articulation:

  • Swivel neck
  • Swivel-hinge shoulders
  • Hinged elbows
  • Swivel wrists
  • Swivel waist
  • Swivel-hinge hips
  • Swivel-hinge knees

Casey is mostly molded in the appropriate colors but where it is painted, it is done relatively well, given the figure’s scale and mass market value. The hockey mask has a skull design painted on, and the torso has paint applications on the front to set apart a sculpted-on harness. The paint application does not extend to the back, however. The figure’s face “makeup” underneath the removable hockey mask looks a bit sloppy, but I think it fits with the character model. I am sure that it will vary a bit from figure to figure due to the design (which I have to say really reminds me of The Misfits’ “fiend skull” logo).

The TMNT Casey Jones figure includes the character’s signature hockey mask, a baseball bat, and a hockey stick. The weapons can be stored on his back. I wish that Playmates would have either molded the weapons in a different color besides the plain off-white, or added some paint applications to them, as they just look very blah. At the very least I wish they could have added the Eastman branding to the hockey stick like on the show, as it made for a nice nod to one of the original TMNT creators.

Final thoughts

This was the first Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle action figure that I’ve purchased in over twenty years, and while it may not be my favorite version of Casey Jones, I came away impressed. If you are collecting the line, don’t pass him up.
