Crowdfunding Spotlight | The Galaxy Girls (Kickstarter)
Published on Tuesday, July 15, 2014 by
Shawn DePasquale (Space, MN, Arcana Studio Presents Pixies) teams up with artist Sherard Jackson (Assembly, Semantic Lace) in this sci-fi graphic novel.

What is it?

The Galaxy Girls is an all-original, creator-owned, 113-page, full color graphic novel written by Shawn DePasquale and featuring art by Sherard Jackson. The book’s narrative features “two sisters attempting to mend their broken relationship as they race to retrieve their stolen ship, prevent a corrupt government from using a devastating weapon of mass destruction and save the universe from annihilation at the hands of an ancient creature known as The Nibiru.”

Check out the Kickstarter project’s fundraising campaign video below as well as the 12-page preview/prologue:

Who is behind it?

The Galaxy Girls is written by Shawn DePasquale, whose previous comics writing credits include Arcana Studio Presents Pixies #1 and the Space, MN graphic novel, both published by Arcana Studio. DePasquale is perhaps best known to comics readers for his work as a letterer: He has over seven dozen individual credits (per The Comic Book Database), including multi-issue stints on Lucid (Archaia Entertainment), The Clockwork Girl (Arcana Studio), and Letter 44 (Oni Press).

The book’s artist is Sherard Jackson, whose previous notable works as a featured illustrator include the miniseries Assembly (Antarctic Press) and Semantic Lace (Devil’s Due Publishing). Jackson has also served as a colorist on DC’s Legends of the Dark Knight.

Between the two of them, DePasquale and Jackson have about two decades of experience as published comics professionals.

How much money does it need and when does the fundraising campaign period end?

As of this writing, the The Galaxy Girls fundraising campaign has received pledges adding up to the amount of $3,063—just a little over 27% of its $11,000 goal—with 38 days left in its campaign period. The fundraising period ends on Friday, 22 August 2014, 10:30 AM PDT. The Galaxy Girls will be delivered only if the minimum $11,000 goal is pledged before the end of the fundraising period.

Where will the crowdfunding contributions go?

Fundraising contributions will go towards the cost of the Kickstarter administrative fees ($1,100) and paying artist Sherard Jackson. Jackson will be paid a page rate of $88 per page for 113 pages, for a total of $9,900. Note that this page rate is reasonably within range of industry standard page rates for artists.

DePasquale will pay out of pocket for all the backer rewards, assuming the project is successfully funded.
