Crowdfunding Spotlight | Red Angel Dragnet, Vol. 1: Lose This Skin
Published on Thursday, August 28, 2014 by
The Kickstarter campaign for this 88-page original graphic novel promises to reward every backer with a free 22-page digital comic, regardless of whether or not it meets its baseline funding goal.

What is it?

Red Angel Dragnet, Vol. 1: Lose This Skin is an 88-page graphic novel. Originally planned as a four-issue miniseries (the first issue of which was successfully funded on Kickstarter last year), creators Eric Palicki and Anna Wieszczyk have decided to release the entire project (which includes the previously released first issue) as a standalone volume. Palicki describes the work as

… the story of Nate Reed, a Chicago bookseller who discovers that demons really do exist. Inspired by sigils and symbols found in his own rare books, Nate covers himself in protective tattoos and endeavors to fight the supernatural forces that haunt his city.

As Nate’s collection of tattoos has grown, so has his confidence, and he’s realized that the same tattoos that protect him from dangers without can also protect him from dangers within. Nate Reed has summoned a demon into his own body, caging it there, where he can draw on its power.

However, Nate Reed has inadvertently turned his own skin into the world’s most comprehensive magical text. RED ANGEL DRAGNET, then, is the story of one bad night, during which an unseen puppet master will attempt to destroy Nate Reed and claim that skin for himself. Thanks to his tattoos, Nate Reed has grown from terrified to confident and from confident to arrogant, and Nate’s invisible adversary will use that arrogance against him.

Before the night is over, Nate Reed will discover that there’s nothing wrong with a little bit of fear.

Who is behind it?

The Red Angel Dragnet Kickstarter campaign is headed by Columbus, Ohio-based writer Eric Palicki (Twitter) who, in addition to getting the first issue of Red Angel Dragnet successfully funded on Kickstarter, counts the crowdfunded graphic novel Orphans, Vol. 1 among his previously published comics works.

Providing the art for the book is Polish artist Anna Wieszczyk (deviantART). Most notably, Wieszczyk has served as the illustrator on BOOM! Studios/Archaia Entertainment’s Lucid (reviewed here) and the original graphic novel Interesting Drug.

How much money does it need and when does the fundraising campaign period end?

As of this writing, the Red Angel Dragnet fundraising campaign has received pledges adding up to the amount of $2,797—some 43 % of its $6,500 baseline goal—with 22 days left in its campaign period. The fundraising period ends on Saturday, 20 September 2014, 9:00 AM PDT. Red Angel Dragnet, Vol. 1: Lose This Skin will be delivered only if the minimum $6,500 goal is pledged before the end of the fundraising period. However, all backers who pledge at least $1 will receive a free digital copy of Red Angel Dragnet #1 (see below) regardless of whether or not the campaign meets its target.

Where will the crowdfunding contributions go?

Fundraising contributions will cover the cost of printing and shipping the 88-page Red Angel Dragnet, Vol. 1: Lose This Skin books. Palicki assures backers that there will be full transparency as to the dispensation of funds and the project progress. In addition, artist Anna Wieszczyk has already been paid a page rate and most of the art for the book has been completed.
