Marvel Comics released their full solicitations for books shipping in January. Time to see what is interesting for that month.
The full solicitations can be found here.
Each month I’ll take a look through and see how the solicitations will affect my reading for that month. Books fall into four categories: Books I Read (monthly books), Books I’ll Check Out (new ones to try), Unlimited Books (books I’m interested in but won’t spend money on so I’ll wait for them to show up on Marvel Unlimited), and the dreaded Books I’m Dropping (just like it says, goodbye.)
Also some random thoughts while surfing through the listings.
Books I Read (physical): Uncanny Avengers, Star Wars, New Avengers, Avengers, Secret Avengers, Captain America & the Mighty Avengers, Uncanny X-Men, All-New X-Men
Books I Read (digital): S.H.I.E.L.D., Deathlok, Bucky Barnes: The Winter Soldier, Guardians of the Galaxy, Legendary Star-Lord, Fantastic Four, All-New Invaders, Moon Knight, Ms. Marvel, Punisher, Black Widow, Nightcrawler, All-New X-Factor, Men of Wrath
Books I’ll Check Out: Operation: S.I.N., Angela: Asgard’s Assassin, X-Men
Unlimited Books: Thor, All-New Captain America, Superior Iron Man, Guardians 3000, Daredevil, She-Hulk, Loki: Agent of Asgard, Amazing X-Men
Books I’m Dropping: None
Uncanny Avengers: This is a tough one. Just that collection of characters turns me off. But it’s Avengers so…
Star Wars: YES YES YES YES. I liked what little of Marvel’s Star Wars that I read. Wish those stories were official continuity still. I am worried about Cassaday. I love his work but he’s not known for quickness.
Unbeatable Squirrel Girl: Already gave my thoughts on this here (link article)
Wolverines: Instant pass. And Fantomelle? Seriously? I can’t stand the weekly comic trend. It has to end.
S.H.I.E.L.D.: This solicitation kind of reads like the book will be funny? I hope not. I want a serious espionage book
Spider-Verse: No. Just no.
Spider-Woman: I was interested in checking this out but two things working against it: 1- Hopeless and Land, 2 – Spinning out of Spider-Verse (never works well to launch a new book out of an event)
Deathlok: Nathan Edmondson is doing some kick-ass Marvel work. He should have been on S.H.I.E.L.D.
Operation: S.I.N.: The ONLY good thing about the Original Sin event was the “man on the wall” concept and I want to see more of that explored
Thor: Disappointed. Thor vs Thor. Do we need another “hero versus hero” fight?
Thor/Captain America/Iron Man/Angela: The status of all these could change from Unlimited to Digital because haven’t read the first issue yet. Except Thor. Read the first issue. It’s an Unlimited book.
Guardians of the Galaxy: This is a bubble book. It’s leaning towards “Unlimited” status and a lot will depend on the storyline after the symbiote one.
Legendary Star-Lord: Same as above, but leaning more towards “books I’ll drop”.
Inhuman: This book is still coming out?
All-New Invaders: I always liked DC’s Legacy Heroes with the Justice Society and Infinity, Inc. Glad to see Marvel is starting to play around with that as well.
She-Hulk: This book is being canceled? Really? What a shame. Another victim of (insert article).
X-Men: I had dropped this awhile ago but G. Willow Wilson is doing awesome work on Ms Marvel, so this bears checking out.
All-New X-Factor: Can’t believe this is being canceled. So many bad books stay alive and good ones like this don’t get a chance.
Two books being canceled, two books that shouldn’t be. A couple of interesting new books starting. Some books on the bubble. Standard month.
