How to Install Shaders on Minecraft
1. Install OPTIFINE
The first step is downloading and installing Optifine. Since the vanilla Minecraft doesn’t support shaders so this step is required. If you use Minecraft version 1.14 or higher then it could be supported by Optifine.
This is an easy task. First, head over to Optifine Downloads page, then click the “Show all versions” text to see all versions of Optifine. Second, find the right version that compatible with your Minecraft version. In my case, I choose the Minecraft 1.16.2. Then click the “Mirror” text to start downloading (a .jar file).

When the downloading process is finished, start installing Optifine right away. Make sure you have Java installed on your computer. Then right click on the downloaded file, choose Open with Java (TM) Platform SE binary.

Wait for a few minutes to complete the installation, then we move to the next step.
Make sure you have the latest version of Minecraft on your PC or Optifine may not be able to install normally because you can only do this by running the game from the Minecraft launcher with NO MODS.
2. Download Shaderpacks That You Prefered
A bunch of shader packs are available online. Some of them are quite dark while others will have insanely bright textures. Choose a shader pack that suits your needs! There may have an incompatibility between shader packs and Optifine version but if you download the brand-new shader pack and running the latest version of Optifine on your system, then there will be no problem at all. After downloading the shader pack, you will get a zipped file. Please make sure to remember the location of the folder on your local hard drive.
Here is the list of shader packs below that are available:
- BSL Shaders
- Complementary Shaders
- Oceano Shaders
- Nostalgia Shader Pack
- Sildur’s Vibrant Shaders
- Sonic Ether’s Unbelievable Shaders
- Continuum Shaders
- projectLUMA Shaders
- Sora Shaders
- Vanilla Plus Shaders
- Chocapic13’s Shaders
- Beyond Belief Shaders
3. Install Shaders on Minecraft
Before installing shaders, you need to launch the Optifine modified version of Minecraft.
Options–Video Settings–Shaders–Shaders Folder
Now you will get a window where you are supposed to drop the shader pack on your local hard drive. Locate the compressed zip folder on your local hard drive then drag and drop into this window. This window shows the contents of the ‘shaderpacks’ folder.
Normally, the ‘shaderpacks’ folder’s location is: [User Name]–AppData–Roaming–.minecraft–shaderpacks
The shader pack is now integrated with the game.
Alternately, you can directly head to the ‘shaderpacks’ folder using File Explorer and drop the zip folder. The shader pack will be automatically integrated the next time you open the game.

4. Restart Minecraft
After all steps above are done, just restart the game then enjoy it. If you get an error that showing Fast Rendering is turned on, you can turn it off from the Performance tab under Settings.
Conclusion
There are a lot of steps are required but I hope you can install Minecraft shaders without any hassle. Enjoy the great graphics that shader packs bring to you in the game.
