Description
Frank Johnson, an itinerant musician and shipping clerk, left behind a remarkable treasure when he passed away in 1979. Among his belongings were more than 2,300 notebook pages filled with comics and 131 unbound drawings. These creations include a massive, continuous storyline that begins in the earliest surviving notebook dated 1928, a time before comic books were officially recognized. This incredible journey chronicles the exploits of a unique cast of characters over a span of 50 years.
Throughout his life, Johnson invented many conventions and storytelling tropes that now define the comics medium. His work effectively serves as a secret history of comics, showcasing an alternative narrative that predates many popular comic works we know today. This debut publication, titled Frank Johnson, Secret Pioneer of American Comics Vol. 1, is the first of two volumes, each exceeding 600 pages, that will assemble the best 1,200 pages of his comics.
This volume features Wally’s Gang, Johnson’s 50-year magnum opus, which chronicles the humorous and cliff-hanging adventures of a group of bachelor friends. The narrative explores their lives, friendships, and the challenges they face, offering readers a delightful blend of humor and relatable storytelling.
Additionally, the volume includes The Bowser Boys, a darkly slapstick depiction of bohemian street life. This series is notable for being one of the earliest underground comic series, providing a raw and unfiltered look at a unique subculture. The Bowser Boys challenges the norms of traditional comic storytelling, pushing boundaries and exploring themes that resonate with adult audiences.
In Volume 2, readers can look forward to Juke Boys, which promises absurd and self-reflexive graphic experimentation that will continue to showcase Johnson’s innovative spirit.
This astounding work has been curated and presented by historian Chris Byrne and fine artist Keith Mayerson. They have taken great care to bring Johnson’s significant contributions into the public eye, providing not only the comics themselves but also valuable historical context and analysis. Their insights help illuminate the importance of Johnson’s work in the evolution of the comic medium.
